Bodywork Techniques – Deep Tissue, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release, Muscle Energy, Lymphatic Drainage

Deep Tissue

Deep tissue massage is a massage therapy technique designed to concentrate on the deeper layers of muscle and the surrounding connective tissues. It is mainly used to treat musculoskeletal issues such as strains and sports injuries.

Through slow strokes and deep finger pressure, irregular muscle patterns that have developed in the body are manipulated to release the build-up of tension, alleviating the pain caused by these irregularities. It also helps to break down scar tissue.

These techniques are applied while either following or crossing over the muscle fibres, fascia and tendons.

Deep tissue massage can be an intensive form of therapy, as breaking down scar tissue and releasing muscle tension can require applying a good deal of pressure to these areas of the body. It is not uncommon to experience discomfort during these sessions, and you may feel stiff or sore for a day or so after.

Some common problems people experience that can benefit from deep tissue massage include:

  • Chronic muscular pain
  • Injury rehabilitation and recovery
  • Repetitive strain injuries
  • Incorrect posture
  • Limited mobility

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy is a technique used to alleviate pain in the body being caused by what is known as a trigger point. The trigger points are areas of tight muscle tissue (often called knots) that can be negatively affecting the body in a variety of ways.

These trigger points can be tender to touch or a cause of constant pain and can result in discomfort occurring in other parts of the body. They can cause dysfunction within your body by inhibiting movement and even lead to headaches.

As a patient, you will often be able to determine where a trigger point is by the pain, but sometimes a trigger point can lead to pain in other areas. This will require your therapist to assess your body and feel around for tight bands or nodules of muscle that you may not have noticed.

Trigger point therapy aims to release these tight areas of contracted muscle by applying pressure to them, causing the muscle fibre and nervous system to relax. Other techniques employed to treat trigger points are stretching, heat application and dry needling.

Benefits of trigger point therapy can include:

  • Chronic pain relief
  • Reduce muscle tension
  • Improve range of motion and flexibility
  • Increase blood circulation
  • Alleviate headaches

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is a bodywork technique used to recorrect the irregularities that form within the fascia of the body. Fascia is a layer of fibrous connective tissue that surrounds muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and binds structures together or allows them to slide smoothly over each other.

Over time, the fascia can tighten and become tense due to repetitive physical strain, trauma, injury, and even frequent inactivity. When the fascia becomes tight or constricted, it can shift the natural position of the body out of alignment.

This can not only lead to pain in the affected area but can cause issues with other bodily functions. When your body isn’t properly aligned, other areas will start to compensate for the dysfunction, which can cause pain in those areas.

Myofascial release therapy gently kneads and works on the fascia to correct it back into its natural position. The pressure applied tends to be lighter than other techniques, and the focus is on slowly stretching and releasing large area of tissue.

Some of the benefits of myofascial release include:

  • Increase blood circulation
  • Corrects posture
  • Pain relief
  • Improves mobility
  • Relieves stress
  • Assist tissue recovery

Muscle Energy Techniques

Muscle energy techniques refer to a broad range of therapeutic bodywork techniques that are aimed at improving joint function and stretching tight muscles and fascia. Unlike most other therapeutic bodywork techniques, the patient is actively involved in the process.

Once the practitioner has found a tight or restricted joint, they will stretch it to a precise point of resistance and ask the patient to activate certain muscle groups, all while carefully controlling that position. The contraction and subsequent relaxation of these muscle groups promotes loosening of tight muscles and lengthening of the joint.

The aim is to be able to move the joint through a restrictive barrier and increase the flexibility and range of motion. It also helps to lengthen short muscles and strengthen any weakened muscle in the area.

Muscle energy techniques have been used to benefit many health issues, including:

  • Relieve muscle spasm
  • Pain relief
  • Improve range of motion in joints
  • Lengthen muscle
  • Relax tight muscle

Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage massage is a form of massage that promotes lymph fluid movement in the body. Through specialised techniques, the skin is gently massaged to encourage the lymph fluids to flow through the network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes.

This flow of fluid helps to remove waste and toxins from the body tissue, but can sometimes be interrupted by health conditions. This can cause the fluid to build up in certain areas of the body, often in the arms or legs, and can lead to swelling. This condition is called lymphedema.

The treatment is applied gently to the skin and does not require much pressure. It can include the use of compression garments to assist with movement of fluid and is designed to relax the nervous system and boost immune function. It encourages the body to naturally eliminate toxins, dead cells, chemicals and viruses.

This type of treatment is useful for anyone who is experiencing the following:

  • Swelling
  • Maintain blood circulation
  • Boost immune function
  • Stress
  • Lymphedema
